Hitachi, Japan March 2023

A piece I made with sewn strips of algae based bioplastic went to a textile exhibition in Hitachi, Japan. Pepe Para Riki was inspired by the North Island Coastal Copper butterfly which is endemic to New Zealand and I often see around the sand dunes by Papamoa Beach. The thin sheets of bioplastic have been coloured with ink and I drew marks with bioplastic mixed with graphite powder.

Baycourt Theatre, Tauranga, 40th Birthday, April 2023

I created the 20 banners for the B40: X-hibition which was shown in the X Space in Baycourt. I was put forward by the Incubator Creative Hub in Tauranga to do the artwork. This project was for the theatre’s 40th birthday celebrations and the banners showed photographs and newspaper clippings from Baycourts archives over the last 40 years. The exhibition was up for a week from 21-29 April and the banners form part of the Civic Art Collection held by Tauranga City Council. It was good to see the banners up in the space and illuminated. Was quite a challenging project with the old images and low resolution files I had but I do enjoy a challenge and the outcome was good.
