Turning About One Another
Polyvinyl acetate on aluminium board, 600mm x 600mm
This artwork is an exploration of the interdependence of human relationships. The intertwining strands represent the connection between individuals and a reliance on one another, while the gestural quality of the work speaks to the organic nature of human relationships. The stretched lengths of the translucent medium create a sense of fluidity and movement and the implication of something ever-changing and evolving as interdependent relationships do.
I have used Mod Podge for various things in my practice over the years, it is very similar to PVA but has more flexibility. I have mixed paints with it and created works from that. I have used it for photography to shine light through and capture with a macro lens. Before algae-based bioplastic came onto the scene, I thought about creating a body of work with it. The idea that I considered was making sheets and drawing on them. I created a sheet about A3 in size but then abandoned the idea and draped the sheet over a mannequin in my studio. Over time I noticed that the sheet stretched and as I looped it, it stretched to a long thin piece. It continues to move, it is fluid. I made another piece and used it in Tuning About One Another.
I would like to continue to experiment with this medium in my practice, drawing with it or creating forms.
Earlier works done with Mod Podge. Top row - mixed with paint. Bottom row - photographs of reflections produced by shining light through it.
