The Work that Slipped
It took many days to cure due to the many layers folded upon each other, however, the piece has now dried. I do like it, the layers and textures are interesting. I like how glass beads have collected on the edges of the bioplastic which gives a bit of luminosity through their reflectiveness. There are many little pieces from the slipped skin, the pieces pictured below are the biggest two pieces. There was a lot of stress on the bioplastic skin when it fell so there were lots of cracks and breaks which occurred during the fall particularly as there was no glycerin in the mixture for flexibility.
The bioplastic made from my latest agar purchase looks a lot like rawhide. Given I have always thought of these skins that is quite an interesting correlation. It is quite yellow (a dirty ochreish yellow). This natural colour is something that has grown on me.
Of the works I have made which allow the material to do its own thing (pouring on the sand or in the ocean, I think this is my favourite. I find it quite dynamic - movement captured. There is a translucency and texture in the pieces I find interesting to look at.
I like this evolution which had developed from my material investigations and will continue to work making pieces like this for my November install.
