Root Loom Developments

I have got some seeds growing on the loom These dont have pattern templates at this stage but I can add them in a bit later when they are cut. This allows me to test if by letting the root systems establish first and then adding the template that they will have a thicker base which the pattern will grow over and leave more of an embossed effect rather than a cut out effect I am often getting.

I also wanted to test the mirror (acrylic) with the loom. I do feel I need to place the mirror on a thin piece of ply as it is too flimsy do cutouts for the legs (as the table sitting on it warps the mirror). The mirror does slide into a slot in the table which is not only good for transport but gives the roots some darkness. The roots grow in light, but in initial germination, they seem to need the dark to establish which way they need to grow. Roots seek dark and leaves seek light.

I am quite pleased with how it all works together with the mirror and is not far from what I envisioned—I am no carpenter, so I’m pleased that it's standing level and is more or less working in the test. There are kinks to resolve (e.g., the mesh size), but for a first prototype, it is satisfactory for me.

In a gallery space, I feel it will be quite effective with the natural elements (greenery and wood). The mirror will reflect the light and the space as well as the root systems and create an interplay with the viewers, too.

The first mesh frame that I made (and is currently being used) is too unwieldy and despite the corners being reinforced with metal supports, it is twisting and compromising the joins. As the clear acrylic water reservoir has been split in two, I decided to make two mesh frames (outer edges 785 x 1040mm). It also has the advantage of creating two works at a time. I can still use the large mesh and large reservoir on the ground and create a large sheet of root systems so they wont go to waste. In making these frames I used 40 x 30mm timber and used a lap joint rather than a mitre joint. Haven’t done these before but just a common sense thing to work out how they work and overlap. The wood frame will be sealed with an external decking oil to help prevent water absorption and protect the wood.
